Feedback

This is the place

Let me know here, if you got stuck somewhere or if you find explanations not sufficient. You are also welcome to leave a friendly note, if you like the template. While I disabled comments for the ‘pages’, I enabled them for ‘posts’, just to show how easy it is to incorporate a feedback section on your site. With a normal HTML web template, this would be a major headache.

With the approval of the writers I will upload some of the questions I get by email and the answers I sent.

    Hello, like your template but is it possible to correct the typo in the menu? (cusomize = customize). Like it more for us if I could also change the spelling to English UK (customise)
    All the best,

    James

  2. admin says:

    Hi James, thanks. I will correct the spelling tonight. As for the menu bar in general, I am sure you want to get rid of most of what’s on it. Just edit the file header.php in the Jelly folder. Delete the lines you don’t need and change the spelling of those you want to keep. You will also want to add your own links - otherwise your site keeps pointing to http://www.drikatruu.com. Let me know if you need more help. Greetings, Thomas.

  3. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for the reply. I have never used a Blog before so let’s go right for it. I liked your design (after paging through dozens of them). It is clean, simple and I agree with the philosophy you have. Have to replace the jelly beans though!

    Appreciate your offer of help, will surely need it.

    If a book on our new publishing website http://www.burn-a-book.com/ appeals to you I’ll send you a free copy.

    Best wishes,
    James.

  4. Thomas says:

    Great. As for getting rid of the beans, just copy a jpg file you want to use to the images folder of the template and call it endofpost-pix.jpg — this will overwrite the beans and they will be gone for good. No need to change any code.

    images/endofpost-pix.jpg

    I will have a look at your website tonight. Thanks for the book offer. I live in Bangkok though… might come back on your offer later.

    Greetings,
    Thomas

  5. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Sorry to bother you so soon but I have a couple of queries:

    I cannot seem to get plug in to show in the sidebar. I have installed them in wp-content plugins and actived them but they don’t show. Do I have to write some code in the sidebar.php?

    Second, I cannot make the searchbar work and I guess this is my lack of programming knowledge. How do I work out the path to replace I have searchform in:http://www.burn-a-book.com/ wp-content/themes/Copy of jelly/searchform.php

    Regard,

    James

  6. Thomas says:

    Hi James,
    No worries. Glad to get questions. I’ll learn something trying to answer them. As for the plugins

    - what version of WP are you using? Version 2.2 has widget functionality built in, for 2.1 you need the widget plugin.
    - after you activated the plugins, you need to go to presentation/widgets and drag and drop them from the list below (see screenshot) up to the sidebar 1 window. Can you see your plugins/widget listed below? Once they are activated, they should show there.

    As for search, it is a standard widget - you might want to try that once you get your widget admin under control. If not, I can help you to get them integrated in the header or the sidebar.

    Let me know how you go.
    Greetings,
    Th

  7. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for the input, I’ve loaded V2.2 and that seems to have solved the problem. Is there any where to input metatags so the search engines can find a blog?

    Please see what you think so far: http://www.burn-a-book.com/wordpress2/

    I have tried to keep the template in line with your philosphy - clean and uncluttered. Critique, suggestions, bright ideas appreciated.

    Regards,

    James

  8. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    I think I have achieved my desired “Jelly-Look!” Only beaten by one thing - I want to centre the headings on “Recent Posts” “Recent Comments” and Spam Blocked” also the Askimet widget. Is this possible? Tried through the CSS but no success.

    Regards,

    James.

  9. admin says:

    Hi James,

    Add

    .widgettitle {text-align:center}

    to the file style.css (doesn’t matter where but I suggest under “widgetbox”). This will center all your widget titles.

    Congrats to your site. The red font and boarders work very well.
    Thomas

  10. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    All seems to be going well! How do you archive material? How do you get comments to list as CMS on Google (i.e. if I search burn-a-book/wordpress2/ I get “WordPress as CMS>>Blog Archive>>Feedback” listed under http://www.drikatruu.com/feedback/

    Does WOrdPress do archive material automatically? Or am I missing something?

    I like this leave a comment or question section - is this a plug in?

    Regards,

    James

  11. admin says:

    Hi James, yes, archiving is done automatically. Comments as plugin? No, it’s standard wordpress. It’s just that on all other pages I disabled comments: I want the look of a static website and static websites don’t have comments at the bottom of every page (blogs do). Only on this page, which is actually a ‘post’, I enabled comments. You can enable/disable comments on the ‘write page’ and ‘write post’ page under ‘discussion’ (right hand side). Greetings, Thomas

  12. Andre says:

    Hello,

    Just wanted to ask how to remove the previous and next links at the bottom of posts. I’m trying to use the site for an online guide to a festival and would like to figure out how to remove those links. I used the posts for the profiles so I could get feedback.

    I’ve done a lot of other things with the template as you can see and I’m finding that it’s a great tool for creating sub-sites. Looking forward to a response.

    Cheers.

  13. admin says:

    Go to index.php in the jelly folder and search for “navigagtion”. Remove from there to the closing of the div tag (about three lines down, where you see two div tags together). Let me know if this explanation is not clear enough and I will send you more detailed instructions as soon as I am back from my business trip. Cheers, Thomas.

  14. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    I am still a little lost with archiving. Now I have quite a few post and when they drop off the Recent Post list they do not appear in an archive anywhere. It is possible to set up an Archive box under Recent Posts or Recent Comments to show the posts that have dropped off the Recent Posts list?
    Cheers,
    James

  15. admin says:

    Sure. You could add a widget for archives. You could also manually write a page with an index (a directory with links to all posts) and link to it from the top menu bar or the sidebar - this has the advantage that you can add comments, headlines, etc the way you like. Or you could add a category widget. In any case there will be a link to page 2 of your posts once you reach the number set in your preferences and so readers who want to go through all posts will find also the older ones.

  16. Maria says:

    I’m beginner to Wordpress and wants to experiment making CMS site with my desktop first before publishing on http://www. I’ve downloaded XAMPPLITE and Wordpress already but how can I upload your theme? I like your theme by the way, clean and simple.

    Sorry for idiotic question as I don’t have knowledge about computers at all.

    Thanks for your patience and help.

  17. admin says:

    Hi Maria, I wouldn’t worry too much about experimenting directly on the web: as long as you don’t let others (incl. search engines) know that you exist, nobody will see what you do.

    As for installing, you need to upload the Jelly folder with all it’s files into a folder called ‘themes’ - you find this folder inside a folder named ‘wp-content’ - which you find in the directory where you installed WordPress. Have fun.

  18. Maria says:

    Thanks for your reply.

    I’ve been learning Wordpress this past 1 1/2 week but I really couldn’t understand.

    Through engine searches, I found your site and others. Then, started learning from them but to no avail.

    What I understand is that Pages are static and posts are dynamic. But to where to put layout of my website, I don’t know where to start or where to go.

    I am so interested to learn building an ecommerce site with Wordpress. Reviews of wordpress are too good to pass not to be learned.

    What can you suggest for me? What should I learn first? Do you think I need to study HTML, CSS, etc.. Is there a way to learn building Wordpress sites the simple way?

    Can you detail for me which resources or things I should know first. Where to learn with visual aids because the Wordpress CODEX can’t guide me much.

    Thanks a lot for your help.

    Maria

  19. admin says:

    Hi Maria, I suggest you use the default template your WordPress installation comes with. If you do that, you don’t need any HTML or CSS knowledge and can fully focus on content. Once you are familiar with basic WordPress operation and have created a number of pages and/or posts you can then think about the appearance of your site and experiment with templates. Many of them don’t require any knowledge of HTML or CSS either. Drikatruu Jelly offers easy customization but you need to change template files which might not be what you want to do at this stage. Do it later - focus on your content first. Good luck and … have fun. Thomas.

  20. Maria says:

    Thanks a lot Thomas for your reply. Yes, I’ll follow your advice. That might be the better way.

    Thanks again.

    Maria

  21. Morten says:

    Hi Thomas,
    what is your reason for using the “text widget” in the example of widgets in the sidebar when the “pages widget” is available?
    I am just wondering if I am missing a point or not, but it seems to me that the pages widget generates pages for me to edit with my content.
    Anyway, I am really enjoying you template concept :-) due to its simplicity and because I have wanted to use WordPress as a CMS system for a while now.
    Thank you for sharing

  22. admin says:

    Hi Morten, great question. The Jelly template uses a horizontal menu bar to link to some of the pages. If I add a page widget, they will all appear there (unless I tinker for much longer than it takes to set up the text widget). Another reason is formatting. Not everybody wants a section with a ‘pages’ heading and when it comes to format sub-headings things get usually a bit complicated with widgets. Thirdly, I wanted to show that the text widget can be used to build menu blocks and still maintain widget functionality: you can easily rearrange the order or add/delete stuff. Hope this explains. Greetings, Thomas.

  23. Donald says:

    great theme! simple neat customisable, just what i need.
    thanks!

  24. Jack says:

    Thomas,

    I share the enthusiasm for the site. My question is a follow up to James’ early post. It looks as though we should be able to alter the PHP code to reveal a search box in the header.php file.

    Here’s the code snippet (I added slashes to all lines):

    //
    //
    //
    //
    //

    Since the search box isn’t revealed in the header, I assume a bit of a code change would do the trick. I’m a newbie, so even a bit of a code change scares me…

    Thanks in advance,

    Jack

  25. Jack says:

    oops… even with the PHP comment slashes the code didn’t appear. Hope I don’t break your comment page!!!

    Jack

  26. admin says:

    No worries Jack… if you want to ‘uncomment’ the search box you need to remove the < ?php /*?> before and after the statement.

    Another option is that you add a search widget. In both cases, you will find that the search results will not include ‘pages’ (only posts) unless you add a plug-in for that. If you don’t want to deal with that you also have the option of adding a Google ’search this site’ option. Greetings, Thomas.

  27. Karl Staib says:

    Thomas I love the design of the site, but I want to make a few changes.
    1. change font in widgets
    2. center links in navigation bar
    and
    3. increase size of font in navigation bar

    Can you help me?

  28. admin says:

    Hi Karl, nice job with your site. I had a rather stressful day and was… ready for your Stress Corner. As for your questions, you can change the widget font by adding something like the following

    #widgetbox {font-family:”Courier New”, Courier, monospace;}

    Change font names to suit your taste. Add the line somewhere in the widgetbox section of style.css

    To center links in the navbar find the line that starts with #nav ul …

    in style.css and change it to

    #nav ul{margin:auto; list-style-type:none; width:auto;}

    As for increasing font size, that’s not so easy, because of the background. If it’s important maybe easier to throw out the existing menu bar (all the lines starting with #nav) and copy/paste in a new one - there is plenty free ones available.

    Keep up the good work. Greetings, Thomas

  29. Karl Staib says:

    Hey Thomas,
    Thanks so much for replying so quickly. I will implement the changes this weekend.
    Karl

  30. Mark S. Meritt says:

    Love the template! Very glad to be using it.

    Just not so knowledgable about CSS in terms of making a few modifications. What I’d really love is to shrink the size of the text in the sidebar. I find it a bit unusual and distracting to have the heading and text there be as big as the headings and text in the main body. What changes would need to happen to make the sidebar headings the same point size as the main body text and the sidebar text the same size as either the header menu page names or the post meta data that shows up in the main body area? I think it would make for a much more elegant looking sidebar, making the whole things more like a typical website.

    Thanks again for the great work.

  31. Steve says:

    Thomas,

    You theme has been a great way for me to get dirty with WordPress themes. One thing I’ve been trying to do is to add some additional space between the vertical bar and the text to the left. Where can I do that?

    Thanks!

  32. admin says:

    Hi Steve, try changing the following line in style.css

    .narrowcolumn {float: left; padding: 0 0px 20px 45px; margin: 0px 0 0; width: 535px;}

    I took your question as a hint and added a bit more space on my site as well. How? Just decrease the width from 535px to 515px for example. Let us know your site address, so we can have a look. It’s always fun to see what others do with the Jelly template. Greetings, Thomas

  33. admin says:

    Hi Mark, I took your question as a hint too and lowered the font size for the headings in the side bar. How? I added the line

    #widgetbox h2 {font-size: 130%;}

    in the file style.css in the section where all the widgetbox formatting is. Similarly you can add font-size instructions to all the sidebar elements. I didn’t do this on my site, cause I like it super simple :-). BTW, I like the logo on your site. Cheers, Thomas.

  34. Brett says:

    Hi Thomas,

    I wanted to say thanks for sharing this fantastic theme with everyone, it’s perfect for beginners like myself who have no prior experience with wordpress or website design. Your instructions are clear and make it easy for anyone to customize their site. I have setup a simple blog for my wife using your theme and will hopefully get around to doing one for myself soon.

    Thanks & keep up the great work.

  35. Chris says:

    Thanks for a very helpful template, Thomas.

    One question: The link to the design tool (http://www.drikatruu.com/design-tools/) doesn’t seem to work. Can you recommend an alternative?

    Best

    Chris

  36. admin says:

    Thanks for telling me Chris. If the problem continues I will replace the current tool with something else. In the meantime you might want to try one of the below or google for one of the many others available for free on the web.

  37. Steve says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Any chance of a 3-column version of this template???

  38. admin says:

    Hi Steve, it’s kind of you to ask… I plan to spend some time with Jelly once WP2.3 is released (testing & minor enhancements), but for the time being I have no plans for a 3-column version. I like to keep things simple - for me that’s the bigger challenge.

    Personally I like the one-column option of the template, but I have to admit that not many Jelly users seem to be using it.

  39. Mark S. Meritt says:

    Thanks so much for the tip. Playing with the figures, I bumped the widgetbox h2 to 110%, all other widgetbox text elements to 95%, and I changed the h2 top margin from 20px to 10px, and I got what I think is a nice looking result, at least on Safari. Thanks!!

  40. Chris says:

    Thanks again, Thomas.

    The color tools you recommended worked perfectly.

  41. M. J. Maddox says:

    James,
    I haven’t quite finished setting up my site with Jelly, but I’ve got to take time out to thank you for this wonderful theme. I’ve tried-unsuccessfully–to adapt a couple of other WP themes that were almost, but not quite what I wanted. Since I’m coding illiterate, I did not have complete success. Yours is the first that I’ve come across that provides help for modifying it. Thanks mille fois.

  42. M. J. Maddox says:

    HELP!
    Alas, I have come across problems.

    First - My new pages look great in Safari.

    BUT In Mozilla, some of the footer goes to the header.

    In Explorer, the main column shoots off to the right and the sidebar isn’t even in sight. The footer, however, is where it ought to be.

    I can’t check on what a linked page does because I can’t figure out what to change the links in the menu bar to.

    Will appreciate your help.

  43. M. J. Maddox says:

    Me again, Thomas

    First, apologies for calling you “James.”

    Second, the jelly theme is at mjmaddox.org/wordpress and not the site I originally gave you. I really love this theme so I hope that you can tell me how to make it come up correctly in other browsers. I intend to use it as my site index page.

  44. admin says:

    Hi Peggy, sorry for the late reply - just back from a couple of days at the beach. Your sight looks great - love the cats. I had a look at it with Mozilla Firefox and with IE7 and both render your site just fine. I guess that means you were able to solve the problems yourself. Well done.

  45. M. J. Maddox says:

    Thanks for getting back to me.
    I’m glad to know that it’s all right in IE7. My Explorer is Explorer for Mac 5.2 and the middle part of my page shoots off to the right. I guess most people who regularly use IE have a later version so I’m not going to worry about it.

    I do have a couple of other things I haven’t been able to figure out yet. Is there a way that I can get the search box to go above the categories in the “Blog Home” box? (I’ve changed “Blog Home” to “The Uses of Literacy”)

  46. admin says:

    Hi Peggy, as for moving the search box, you can use the widget function (Jelly is widget ready). Drag and drop. If you drag and drop the search box widget above the category widget, you should be OK. Want to read more about widgets?

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/WordPress_Widgets

  47. admin says:

    Peggy, me again. I had a look at my server stats to see how common IE5.2 is… here we go: out of the about 3000 visitors of this site in the last few weeks there were 2 who used IE 5.2 - one on September 29 and one on September 30. You probably know them :-) On another site of mine with many more visitors, the number of IE5.2 users was less than 0.02%. May I recommend upgrading?

  48. Peggy says:

    I see that I am way out of date, but I was only worried about IE in terms of people accessing my site. I hardly ever use anything but Safari.

    There are still a couple of other things I’d like to alter, but can’t find where they are:
    1. I want to delete the title after the Continue reading thingy
    2. I want to change some things in the bit at the bottom of the post that says
    Posted in —–, Date:——
    Feedback—-

    This part can be changed in the file single.php in the jelly folder. As for your question regarding the ‘Continue reading thingy’, can you send me a link to a page where you have that problem? Thanks and … sorry for the late reply. Greetings, Thomas.

  50. Mark S. Meritt says:

    Quite enjoying developing my site with your theme. Making various customizations. One seemed like a piece of cake, nothing, fancy, yet something funny is happening. I’ve modified the footer, but the RSS entries/comments text isn’t appearing on its own line — it’s along with the few little logos I put in the footer, and collectively it all looks very off due to centering. It just absolutely basic HTML, and the identical code is working fine in the footer at my other site, http://potluck.com. Any ideas?

  51. Mark S. Meritt says:

    Ah, another thing. Though the blue headers look pretty, I find it really distracting/confusing having headers the same color as the hyperlinks. I feel people will be confused trying to click on headers when they shouldn’t be. I just tried to change the header color, thought I did it right in the CSS, but nothing changed. Can you advise? Thanks.

  52. admin says:

    Hi Mark, to your first question: you might want to try forcing a new division by adding

    (div style=”clear:both; margin-bottom:10px”)(/div)

    use < and > instead of ( and )

    in the footer.php file just above the pictures. As for your second question, when I had a look at your site the header ‘Creative Arts’ was black already, so I assume you figured it out yourself. Let me know if I misunderstood your question. Congrats to your very interesting site by the way!

  53. Mark S. Meritt says:

    Thanks so much for the response. In the meantime, I had poked around and solved things a bit. I found the clear: both thing online to use with a br tag, and that seems to work well. I applied that for both the graphics in the footer as well as the text below the right-hand graphic in the header, and that all seems to work well now on both Safari and IE.

    I also noticed that the CSS change I made for the header was working on IE the next day, and now that I’m back in town, it’s suddenly working on Safari. I’m guess probably that night I wrote the comment I probably just needed to quit Safari and restart it!

    The one thing not working still was that the footer graphics were all the way at left even though they were now on their own line, but I remembered that you’d noted somewhere that images always automatically float left. So I added a center float class for images, and that’s fine now.

    So I think all is set now! Thanks.

    And thankis for the congrats on the site. Still in the works, but coming along!

  54. Peggy says:

    Thomas,
    It’s been awhile!
    I’ve been having problems with my sites, not because of Jelly. Jelly is great. Because of my own stupidity with Wordpress.

    Anyway, I’ve managed to get rid of the extra items I didn’t want at the bottom of my posts.
    The “Continue Reading” thingy I mean is the link that comes at the end of a post on which I’ve used the -More- feature. Ex. Today’s post says
    Continue reading “Don’t Apologize for Being Literate”
    I want to get rid of the post title there and have it just say “Continue reading”

    Another thing I’d like to alter is the way the dates are stated.
    Dates in the categories and archives come up this way:
    Wednesday, October 17th, 2007
    In front page postings the date is expressed without the year as
    October 17
    In the continuation of the post, the date comes up this way:
    Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
    How can I change them all to come up this way:
    October 17, 2007
    (without the day of the week, time of day, and without a ‘th” at the end of numbers)
    Thanks

  55. Peggy says:

    PS on dates
    I have figured out how to get rid of the day of the week and the “th” on the numbers.

    I still can’t find how to put the year on the date at the end of the post that appears on the front page when it is first posted.

  56. admin says:

    Hi Peggy, I’m a bit confused… the post ‘Don’t Apologize for Being Literate’ appears on a site not powered by Jelly… maybe that’s the problem :-)

  57. Peggy says:

    Thomas,
    I’ve decided to use a different theme on the AmericanEnglishDoctor and reserve Jelly for my other site, mjmaddox.org

    I’m going to use the latter ite as a static page and not as a blog. I changed the other site because I needed three columns and didn’t know how to add a column to Jelly.

    I don’t need mjmaddox.org to be a blog since its chief purpose is to have my writing credentials available should any agents or publishers wish to follow up one of my queries.

    Now I’ve got to go back in and change it back to non-blog status.

    Thanks for all your help. I’ve really learned a lot from working with Jelly. It’s a great template.

  58. John Rocheleau says:

    Hi,

    Before I go ahead, I want to ensure that Drikatruu can be used to create a site that is functioning primarily like a standard web site, but with full WP blogging capabilities where desired and full CMS capabilities for managing content throughout.

    I envision having a blog section that is linked to from the home page, that will function as a regular blog. On all pages, I want to ensure that the sidebar menus can be auto-updated with links to any new article that is written, whether it is in the blog section or on a static page, etc. I guess that is normal for a CMS, but I am a bit new to this. Thanks for bearing with me.

    Also, how easy is it to customize the appearance of the site? I have built a few sites using Dreamweaver, but I have no idea how customizing this template is done. One other question: Is the styling totally achieved by external CSS? That is what I am looking for.

    Have I explained myself properly? Do you know what I mean?

    Thanks,
    John

  59. admin says:

    Hi John, have a look at this site. It is done with the Drikatruu Jelly template - nothing added. You will see that the site appears like any static site but you can call the blog section from the navigation section on the right hand side. Actually you can use most templates this way, but Jelly is hopefully easier to customize. CSS? Have a look at style.css in the Jelly folder, it contains all the formatting. Better than that, it comes in an easy to understand/change format. Auto-updated links? That’s what you have a widget section for. Have fun.

  60. John Rocheleau says:

    Hi Again,

    Thanks for the information. I forgot to ask though, is it fully functional and tested with the new WP 2.3.1 version.

    Cheers,
    John

  61. admin says:

    Hi John, no, I have not tested it yet with 2.3.1 but considering that well over 100 people are using the Jelly template, I am quite sure I would have heard of issues by now. Anybody out there experiencing problems?

    UPDATE: Ok, finally I DID test Jelly with 2.3.1 - works like a charm without changes. Have fun.

  62. John Rocheleau says:

    Thanks; that’s great.

    John

  63. Chris says:

    Hi there, I setup http://www.charmcitynetworks today using Jelly, and I have had a great experience. I will be recommending it to my clients.

  64. Josh says:

    Hi,

    This is a great product! I am truly enjoying using it.

    I am trying to change the navigation links for the non-blog pages I’ve created in Wordpress. Right now, the “home” link points to http://teathermometer.com/blog/. I would like it to point to http://teathermometer.com/. How do I change that?

    Hi Josh, had a quick look and saw that you find the answer yourself. Congrats. Interesting product by the way - Good luck!

    Hey, there, I just thought I’d announce that I’ve finally completed the initial development of my Drikatruu Jelly-driven site at http://potluckcreativearts.com. I’ve made a few changes to the core template files, made very liberal use of a number of plug-ins especially in the sidebar, and been generally creative with the page/post content. Overall, I think the site works quite nicely — and I think the template certainly does, overall, make quite good on its promise of empowering a CMS/non-blog kind of site, just what I was hoping for. Thanks so much once again for the template!

  67. Josh says:

    Hi,
    I am trying to reduce the width of the right column… is that possible?
    Thanks,
    -Josh

  68. admin says:

    Hi Josh, you do this by adjusting the line which starts with #sidebar in the file style.css. In that line you find witdth set to 290px. You can make that less. If you do so, the space between the main content area and the navigation area on your right will increase. If you want to make the content area wider, try increasing ‘width’ in the line that starts with .narrowcolumn, currently set at 515px. Greetings, Thomas

  69. Bill says:

    Hey, Thanks for creating such a useful and easy to use template. I was frustrated because everywhere else I looked was only themes. This really lets you use the wordpress tools to create more complex sites. Thanks.

  70. Pete says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Many thanks for the effort you put into creating your Jelly template.

    I’ve just started editing my website. I’m looking at replacing the logo. I quite like the Jelly one, I just need to find a way to change the text to Charity-Fund-Raiser.org Is there a website where I can do this? How did you create the Drikratuu logo?

    Regards,

    Pete

  71. admin says:

    Hi Pete, I’d be happy to let you have the original Photoshop file so you can just change the text, but … I didn’t keep it. Sorry. I just played around with fonts, colors and shades until I had something that looked OK and then saved it as a GIF file.

  72. Greg says:

    Hello!

    Thanks for a great easy to modify template.

    A few design questions:

    1. How do you add a background image to the template?
    2. How do you change the background color if no image is used?
    3. Are you able to have a border completely surround the entire design? In other words frame it out from the background?

    Thanks!

    Greg

  73. admin says:

    Hi Greg, it is all done in the file style.css. How? The whole page is a set of boxes, each defined as a ‘div’ in the style sheet. You might want to use the DOMInspector (a tool that comes with Firefox - google for more info) to find out which part of the screen corresponds to what div. Once you have found that out you go to the style sheet and add for example “border-color:#CC33FF; border-style:solid;” if you want a purple frame around that specific div. Same applies to background images or colors.

    If you want to wrap the whole template in a frame, you need to add borders to more than one box or add a wrapper div to hold all the other divs. I might do that in the next version - it’s not always easy to find the right balance between ’simple’ and ‘plenty of options’. Hope this helps a little.

  74. James says:

    Hi Thomas,
    You helped me set up this site in May and here I am, back again!

    Could you help me sort out a problem please.

    If you look at my site you will see that “Archives” are appearing in “Reviews” not under the Archive heading. I can’t work out how to move them.

    All the best,hope you are having better weather in Bangkok than we are having in Denmark!

    James.

  75. admin says:

    Hi James, yes Bangkok is absolutely lovely this time around. Wish I’d play golf - the weather is perfect for it now.

    Not sure I can help… looks like you have all the blog ‘pages’ under ‘Reviews’. Could make a point that ‘About’ shouldn’t be there either. Are you using some plug-in to create the ‘Archive’ page? I’d probably replace the widget you are currently using for ‘Reviews’ and replace it with a text box widget (e.g. the navigation menu on the right hand side of this website) - then you have absolute freedom and flexibility in terms of what appears there. The number of reviews is managebale through manual entries. Automation through a widget like so often adds complexity and doesn’t save you much time at all. Hope this helps. Cheers, Th.

  76. Andy says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Have been looking at your site for sometime now and have a quick question. Is it possible to have “drop down menus” from your “home page” eg .. You have 9 items on your nav bar can it be made too drop down too reveal more “sub pages”?

    hope I have explained it alright…

    Regards

    Andy

  77. admin says:

    Hi Andy, great question. I have been thinking about this quite a bit myself… I would like to offer them, but as of now I am not willing to pay the price of increased complexity.

    You see, most drop-downs are either driven by CSS, Javascript or both. CSS looks like an easy solution, until you realize that what works well in one browser (Firefox, IE6, IE7, Safari) creates problems in others and vice-versa. To accomodate all of the current browsers you need to apply a few tricks and you still have a pretty good chance to end up with issues at the time of the next browser update. To cut a long story short, in the end I decided that I wanted to keep the Jelly template as simple, stable and low-maintenance as possible - that’s why there is no drop-downs and no rounded corners as of now.

    The good news is that because of its simple structure you will find it easy to integrate ready-made dropdown solutions (google for ‘css drop-down menus’) into the template.

  78. Andy says:

    Hi Thomas!

    Thanks for your quick response, there may already be a ‘plug in’ that could be incorporated into your great design.

    I’m just about ready to make the leap, so I appreciated your honesty & integrity in answering so many questions in your feedback.

    Regards

  79. Will says:

    Hi,

    I love the template. I have a quick question, can you add a third column? I need to have another column between the main post page and side bar.

    Can this be done?

  80. admin says:

    Sorry for the late reply Will. Yes, you can add a third column but I have not made this an option in the template - meaning you’re on your own. Unless you have experience with that sort of thing or you don’t mind spending some time on experimenting with CSS/divs you might be better off chosing a three column template. I’ll do a 3c version of Jelly next year. Greetings, Thomas.

    I am getting the following error when I activate your “theme” then click on “view site”. As such, I can’t really evaluate your theme nor customize it. I have some understanding of html, but php is confusing to me. Can you point me to a solution? Thanks.

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: language_attributes() in /var/www/html/wp-content/themes/jelly/header.php on line 3

  82. admin says:

    Hi John, I believe the problem is with your WordPress install, not with the template… hundreds of people are using this template and nobody has reported a problem. When I had a similar issue some time ago, I was able to fix it by reinstalling WordPress. Good Luck. Th.

  83. John Vezina says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks. It is working now but I had to change servers and upgrade to Wordpress 2.3.1 for unrelated reasons (a “mySQL” version incompatibilty with my old server). In doing that the problem was fixed. I can now play with your theme and see what I can do. Will I keep it? Who can say? How long will it take me? I’ve no idea, but probably a long time…have a good holiday!

  84. Eric says:

    Hi Thomas,

    I have tested out your theme & had some queries. I am not a pro in the Wordpress scripting, so needs yr advises. =)

    Just some queries before the major shifting of theme:

    1) All my photos are all lumped together and the descriptive wordings (captions) are all now right-hand orientated. How to make all these descriptive wordings fall nicely underneath a photo?

    2) Do I have to re-do my widget stuffs again? I have, for example “syndicate this site”, “meta”, “Advertiser” etc. I didn’t see these in the new theme after converting. How to do it?

    Thank you and have a nice day!

    Regards,
    Eric

  85. James Taylor says:

    Any chance of a comment on how to make the template “liquid” and use up all the available screen space, say with a minimum width of 650? I tried applying some of the styles that work on my current site but no luck

  86. admin says:

    jellybeans.jp Hi Eric, as for your question about pictures you probably noticed that some of the little jellybean pix appear on the left and some on the right side of the text area… How is that done: I defined default to appear (float) left and if I want one to appear on the right I add class=”right” - please do a ‘view source’ in your browser and look at the bit of code that calls the pix just right of this text. (just before ‘Hi Eric..’ in the code).

    Now if you want your pix to behave differently (different margin, frame, etc.) I propose you define a new class in style.css (look for ‘right’ as an example) and then add that class when you add a pix to your post.

    As for your widgets, they should work just the same, but might need some formatting. Greetings, Th.

  87. admin says:

    Hi James, in one of the replies above I address the issue of changing width. The current settings are optimized for the vast majority of users. Personally, even if I had a 20+ inch monitor, I would not want my pages to flow accross the full width - difficult to read and… I find it looks strange. Of course the choice is yours. In style.css you can replace current px (pixel) settings with 100% and you will get full width. Good luck.

  88. 2muchcat says:

    Hello! I’ve really been loving your template, for quite a while. Have put so much time into the customization, and am so pleased with the results, design-wise, that it’s tempting to use it to turn other websites into blogs…but it definitely seems to have a few quirks [and I'd love to be your guinea pig, if you need one].

    The most frustrating thing is that the right sidebar simply will not align at the top of the page in ie. It’s perfect in firefox and opera, but invisible in ie — and most people stiill surf in ie [it's 56% of our traffic], and that’s where our only possibilities for making money lie!

    The other day I put a valign tag in the style sheet, and it DID work in ie, after that — for about 30mins. I swear I didn’t change a thing, and it just dropped RIGHT back down to the bottom.

    Also, I can’t seem to get any of the tags near images or at the end of posts to stick. I add them and then they get striped right out, and then there are no spaces or breaks where there should be. Perfect example is the 2nd post up there [index page], now, with all the cats under my desk. The “2much BadCat Wanda Sykes” is way up on the right, and then the rest of the caption for the picture is underneath the picture, as it should be. And this is happening in all browsers.

    Last thing which is frustrating and happens with regularity is that breaks are also put INto the code, somehow [they're invisible], so that lines break for no reason after just a couple of words. As an anal retentive, this drives me nuts. lol Oh, also, sometimes the word-wrap just doesn’t happen and one line only will run WAY off the page, to the right.

    But “worst problem” is the sidebar not aligning at the top in ie. Any version of ie. Please help!

    Otherwise, it’s a really great template, and if these bugs could get worked out, I’d love to tweak it for other sites, and I’ve recommended it more than a few times. Thanks!

  89. admin says:

    Hi 2muchcat, your site looks great on my IE 7. It actually looks the same as on my Firefox, both running under Windows XP. Maybe I’m not looking at what you are looking… Does this site (which uses the standard template) also look misaligned on your computer?

    As for the mysteriously disappearing tags I think I know the reason. It is related to the way WordPress works when using the visual editor. I had the problem myself in the past - nothing to do with Jelly. The good news: there is an easy solution: go to your admin screen, select ‘users’, then select ‘edit’ for the user that’s you and un-tick ‘Use the visual editor when writing’.

    If you are using the visual editor and you edit a post which has tags, it will pull them out. So, if you get a post to work and then turn the visual editor on again and edit the very same post (even if you don’t change anything), you will be back to square one. I also find that annoying, but once you understand that this is what happens, it’s easier to deal with. Hope this helps.

    Great site, by the way. Very impressive customization. Cheers, Thomas.

  90. Tony says:

    Hi Thomas

    First, thank you very much for sharing this template. It is exactly what I need for my site development.

    But I have a problem and can’t seem to work out a solution.

    I want the site to operate very similar to this one… i.e. a static home page, several other static pages, and a blog section.

    It all works fine until I change the permalink structure to /%postname%/ (so I get nice seo friendly posts) then the Blog Home link brings up the static home page rather than the recent posts.

    When I change the permalink structure back to the default the Blog Home link then brings up recent posts.

    I’d greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

    Best reagrds

    Tony

  91. admin says:

    Hi Tony,

    If you look at this site you’ll notice SEO friendly permalinks too. So how does the blog work? Check the link I use under ‘Blog Home’ in the side bar. Nice ‘n easy. It will always bring up your most recent posts.

    Cheers,
    Thomas

  92. Tony says:

    Hi Thomas

    I was using the index.php?paged=1 link when I was having the problem!

    I’ve solved it now. Here’s what I did:

    I created a new Page with the title “Blog” and published it as an empty page.

    In Options | Reading I selected my newly created page as the Front Page Displays: A Static Pages Posts page.

    Finally I edited sidebar.php replacing /index.php?paged=1 with /blog/

    And now it all works fine!

    I don’t know why index.php?paged=1 works on this site but nor on mine, but I like my solution because I now have a page with a the url …/blog :)

    Regards

    Tony

  93. 2muchcat says:

    Hi, Thomas! First, I wanted to say thank you SO very much for not only having this forum but for responding so quickly to questions. Incredible! Sorry I haven’t been as on top of this situation. lol

    DOH! I should have thought to check your site in ie. Same problem! I’m using 6 [and change], but I know there are loads of people using even older versions. I can’t even get 7 because I’m not ready to leave win2k. I had three friends check both my site and yours, today, and they had the same problem with both sites, in ie [don't know which versions they're using]. Neither one of us has a sidebar that’s visible without scrolling to the very bottom of the page! It’s almost as though there’s a valign-bottom tag in there, and adding a valign-top tag is having no effect, whatsoever.

    As mentioned, previously, I LOVE this template! It took me hours to tweak, not minutes…but freely admit I’m anal-retentive about that sort of thing…and I still have to do the style sheet. Will try the fixes you mentioned re the “disappearing code,” because I have been switching back and forth between wysiwyg and html. May your suggestion will prove my solution.

    If we could get this ie thing sorted out, I’d slowly begin tweaking it for other things. It’s one of those “endless possibilites” templates. Very nice!!! Any ideas? I’ll check in every few hours now that I know you don’t take weeks to respond. Hope you’re becoming known for your “customer service,” as well. Thought this sort of thing had gone the way of the 8-track. ;-)

  94. admin says:

    Hi 2muchcat, you are welcome. I had a quick look at your site and at this site under W2K and IE6. Yes, your site has a problem but this site displays fine (I’ll email you a screenshot). I believe that the reason for your sites problem (the sidebar dropping to the bottom) is the width of your sidebar boxes.

    I noticed that your upper sidebar box (bread 4 bread, adsense) is a few pix wider than your lowere box (blog) and both of them are a few pix wider than the sidebar in the original template (as seen on this site). You have two options: make them a bit narrower or make the main text area a bit narrower. If you go through some of my comments on this feedback page you’ll find hints on how to go about this (style.css).

    Hope this helps. Greetings, Thomas.

  95. Brian Tozer says:

    Hi Thomas. Very impressed with your work with this site. Can you verify that the top two banner graphics, in fact any graphics, don’t display in FF. I am using the latest 2.0.0.12 and no graphics, even navbar background. I can send you a screen snapshot if that will help. All OK in IE6 and IE7. I am studying all that you have done and all that you have written, as I hope to use it as the basis for a simple??? CMS for websites. No blog involved.
    Cheers from New Zealand

    Hi Anderson. Go to your wordpress admin panel, select ‘options’, then ‘reading’ - there you can set the number of posts to appear. Greetings, Thomas.

  99. Philip Langley says:

    Hi Thomas

    Love your Jelly design! I’ve adapted it for my site. What I’m trying to do is put together a site with loads of articles, quickly. At this stage don’t care about Google’s whims.

    Because of this, I want to get rid of the timestamp on the posts, so that it isn’t apparent that i just put them together. How do I do this please?

    Thanks - keep up the great work

  100. admin says:

    Hi Philip, go to the file index.php in the jelly folder and remove the bit between ‘Date:’ and the question mark followed by the closing angle bracket. Then save and upload again to your server. All the best and… thanks for your friendly comments. Greetings, Th.

  101. Philip Langley says:

    Hi Thomas

    Like I said, I love the theme.

    One thing though - I need to know how to put more space between paragraphs and pictures. For instance, if you look at http://business-facts.net/sms/?page_id=22, I need more space between that opening graphic and the rest

    Please advise:)

  102. admin says:

    Hi Philip,

    Many ways to do this… the ones that come to mind first are

    - add some line breaks
    - add an empy paragraph (opening and closing p tag with nothing in between)
    - add a lower margin or padding to the picture (in-line or via style.css)
    - leave some white space at the bottom of the picture with Photoshop or similar prog (This will push the text down and the visitor will not see it as part of the picture, since the background is white. With the same trick you can also push pix to the right of course)
    - create a special class for paragraphs to start with more top margin (in style.css) and add that class to your first paragraph

    Choose one… I am sure there is many more :-)
    Greetings,
    Th

  103. Philip Langley says:

    Hi Thomas

    Thanks for that, but the page “ignores” tags. No matter how many I put in, it doesn’t make any difference.

    Thanks

  104. admin says:

    Hi Philip, regarding ‘mysteriously disappearing tags’ please read my comment above from February 3rd on this page. Again, this has nothing to do with Jelly, but it is all about how WordPress works with the visual editor turned on. Hope this helps. Greetings, Thomas,

  105. 2much says:

    First of all, as an impartial user of this template who only knows Thomas by his work [which includes this sort of fabulous and almost unprecedented ("intimate") help, which often doesn't exist even for programs which cost an arm and a leg], I can say…

    To Philip: I had the same problem you did, and Thomas’ fix worked — most of the time. However! If I put all of the text into notebook, made sure there was no double-spacing between words, and added a between paragraphs [no other "html" was required, because it gets hooked up to the style sheet], then plopped it into the visual view for the post, it came out perfectly. Still having a problem with one post, but 14 were fixed, which is a pretty good ratio. I accept that I’m anal-retentive and most people won’t care if the alignments aren’t perfect.

    Also, I have the same problem with the “ignored tags.” What’s happening is that the style sheet is overriding your tags. Many of my pages are connected to more than one style sheet, and style.css always overrides the others. Maybe your problem can be solved by tweaking style.css and using only that css, if you use more. Mine can’t be so easily remedied, so I just make a design change, here and there, to work around it.

    All in all, I still think this is — bar none — THE most fabulous wordpress template out there. And it’s so “sensible” and “simple” [comparatively speaking] that it’s easy to start learning about blog guts without totally screwing yourself up.

    Now for my problem! lol Thomas. Can’t figure out why, and I’ve been over and over the admin panel, but my blogroll isn’t showing up in the sidebar with the rest of the categories. Can’t find any place where there’s a visible vs. invisible. Mind telling me where I’m going wrong?

    http://2muchcat.com Was expecting the blogroll would show [once I added some links to it] at the very bottom, with the rest of the categories. Can’t find the blogroll in the sidebar, archive, whatever page/section.

    Thanks! Been trying to do some maintenance and clean-up, and was reminded just how much I love this template. Seriously. He’s not paying me to say this! lolol 2much

  106. admin says:

    Dear 2much, I built this template as a Content Management System (CMS) for static sites. Static sites usually don’t have blog rolls. So, in the interest of simplicity I did not include this functionality. I did this also because it is easy to add a ‘blog roll’ manually (for those who do use the template for blogs) by using the same technique I propose for the menu in the sidebar: just use a text box widget. Sorry for the inconvenience… should have explained it better. Greetings, Thomas

  107. Josh says:

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for all of your hard work. I love it! I was wondering if there is anyway to post an image without the test wrapping around it, just as I post it visually. Thanks for any suggestions that you can offer! Josh

  108. Josh says:

    Sorry, I meant text, not test.

  109. admin says:

    Hi Josh, you can do that by resetting the ‘float’ property to default, either inline, by adding

    style=”float:none”

    inside the URI of the picture or by defining a class similar to the ‘right’ class (see comment with pix above) in the CSS - just again with ‘float’ set to ‘none’. Then you add that class to the URI of your image. You could also add a clear:both after the pix, as described in another comment above. You choose :-)

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for all your work on this templete, I think it’s great. Feel free to link to my site. I’m still fine tuning things though.

    I do have a weird issue maybe you can help resolve. I have the ad widget added to the sidebar. The ad will not display on the front page, but you do see it when you click a post.

    Any ideas why?

    Thanks for any help.

  111. admin says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for building such a great template.
    It’s been very easy to work with and customize.

    My question for you is the following:
    I edited the style sheet to include a backgroud image for the header. That part worked fine.
    But with a background image, I don’t need a logo, so I tried to remove the logo a tag from the header, but that made the entire header disappear.

    Any suggestions? All I want is a background image on the header and nothing else (that way the search box fits nicely over that image).

    Once again, thanks.

    Rod

  114. Asing says:

    Thanks for a great theme.

  115. Asing says:

    Hi,
    Can the theme be adapted so that you have a sidebar on the left?

    Where can you adapt the menu so that the menu buttons are shown bigger?

  116. admin says:

    Hi Asing, that can be done but it is a manual process (not something pre-configured) which requires some knowledge of CSS (cascading style sheets). If you have that knowledge this template will be easier to modify than any other you’re most likely going to find, because it was written to be understandable (read ‘modifyable’). This applies to the sidebar as well as to the menu buttons. Good luck.

  117. James says:

    Hi Thomas,

    Can you help me sort this one? When I open comments I get:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: show_manual_subscription_form() in /home/www/burn-a-book/wordpress2/wp-content/themes/Copy of jelly/comments.php on line 101

    Even though is shows the fatal error message, the comments are still shown.

    Jame

  118. admin says:

    Hi James, I recommend to reinstall WP. I had a similar problem once, reinstalled and things went fine. Nothing to do with the template - show_manual_subscription_form() is part of standard WP and the file with it’s definition doesn’t get loaded for some reason in your case. Greetings, Th.

    I am trying to resolve an issue for my wife, the color of the sidebars on the right is driving her nuts. I am trying to locate the code for the sidebars themselves, there are only 3 boxes and she would like to remove or change the border color around them. I am unable to locate this code anywhere. If you hit the site you will see the 3 little widget boxes on the right with a long purple line between them and the border. I know this should be in the code as we have not changed much of it.

    If you could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Weather it is in the widget information in the style sheet or the sidebar. We are using Wordpress. Thank you for your time and help.

  121. admin says:

    Hi Adam, you go to the file style.css and look for

    I love your layout, I have two questions, is there a way to make the margin smaller on the lefthand side? I want it so people don’t have to scroll over.

    Also, my search box doesn’t seem to be working, any ideas or tips on fixing that? THANKS!

  124. admin says:

    Hi Carrie, if you make the window smaller you will see that there is almost no margin on the left. If the window is bigger than what Jelly needs, the text gets centered and since the background is white it looks like a big margin.

    As for the search box issue, please read the comments above. I trust you’ll find the answer there ;-)

    Great theme…any thought of coming up with a 2 sidebar version?

  129. Dave says:

    Hi, Is there a way to stop the sidebar showing on just one page please? I would like to use a Google search results page within my site, but the page must be a minimum width of 795 pixels.

    Many thanks,

  130. Pat says:

    Hi, Is there any way to center a Copyscape image in the footer? I should understand your answer if some css needs to be changed. I tried html center img /center but got nowhere.

    Thanks,

  131. Wayne Brooks says:

    Thanks for a great template. It was exactly what I was looking for to implement the upgrade and evolve a static marketing site to an interactive Web 2.0 site. The button menu is a great feature and offered the exact functionality I needed to enable multiple offerings as I envisioned. You can check out the result at YourOnlineBusinessAdvisor.com.

    Great job!

  132. Pat says:

    Hi, I have another question about the script. For some reason the RSS feed is not working. I have a couple test pages on a test site and when I click on the RSS hyperlink at the bottom of the page only the title of the static home page shows up but no content from any of the pages. I am not using Comments because I only want pages. I am using WP 2.5.1. Do I have to enable something for the RSS to work? Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Pat

  133. Lee says:

    Hi Pat, RSS works with posts, not with pages.

  134. Pat says:

    Thank you Lee. I have removed the rss links in the footer but the rss feed reeder symbol still show up in the browser. Do I have to remove something in the (style.css)file to remove the page http://www.mysite.com/feed ?

    Thanks for responding,
    Pat

  135. Norman says:

    Hi
    Many thanks for template. I will be using it for charity site, liked Joomla but it got bloated and drive me mad.

    One problem, have struggled to insert a google video, none of the plug ins seem to work and button on bar leads nowhere when I have inserted link.

    Many thanks for advice

    Norman

  136. Norman says:

    Hi
    Probably should have raised this before my last post re video inserting. Am I missing a crucial point, I have lost my TinyMCE editor, not sure at what stage but now I only get a very basic editor. Is this correct? Is this a function of the Jelly template or a Wordpress problem.

    Am using Wp 2.5.1

    Thanks

    Norman

  137. Paul says:

    Hi Thomas,I’ve a question or two I’d like your help with please. But before I ask the questions can I say what a cracking concept your template is. It’s also a tremendous credit to you for your generosity in sharing it with us.
    Thank you.

    My question is this: I have an image I’d like to position across the top of the page. But when I remove the Wordpress logo and remove your Jelly title the whole body of the document, including the menu navigation bar, goes up behind the image. Any suggestions how I could stop the menu bar and contents going up behind the image?

  138. Norman says:

    Hi

    seemed to have solved problem the hard way by a total re install. I am suspicious of auto update as problems seem to originate from upgrade to 2.6, then went back to 2.5.1 and problem remained

    Thanks anyway

  139. Paul says:

    Hi Thomas,
    I think I’ve solved the problem I wrote to you about on July 20th .

    I’m afraid it’s not a very elegant solution. I created a paragraph () with the appropriate number of then closed the paragraph .

    Do you think this solution will cause problems later on when I develop the site more fully?

    But now there is a real HELP PLEASE – does anyone know why when I call up my site http://www.countertopsforthehome.com I get a …..
    Not Found
    Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here. Message.

    But the ‘pages widget’ come up with the pages I’ve added so far to the site..

    Then when I use the menu selections i.e. Home or Countertop Materials or Use of Site, it immediately takes me to the appropriate page.

    Can anyone help please????
    Paul

    Hello Thom,

    Thanks for sharing this template. Is this adsense ready? Your sample template seems to have adsense in the middle of the content. If it is, all that is needed is change the adsense publisher ID right? (As I did not notice it being covered in the walkthrough of the different components.)

    Can we also put additional plug-ins/widgets in it? Sorry, I am trying to learn how to create a website using WP and would like it to look like one while also adding a blog section to it, so i came across this page and browsed through the information. I might be able to put it to use.

    Your help is appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Dear Thomas,

    I really love your template. Thanks so much.
    I encounter a problem. When press “Home” in the header, it returns the first post. I would like it to be the latest post to appear. How can I do it ? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Have a good day !

  143. Bayard says:

    James,

    I’ll be using the Jelly template to probably create most of the static websites from now on.

    Whenever someone asks me to build a new simple site, I’ll be doing this to avoid the hassle of modifying site content with text editors.

    Your time spent to develop Jelly benefits all of us looking for a good, simple Wordpress CMS solution.

    I noticed the design tools page does not have any links, but rather a large ad section:

  145. Julia says:

    Hi Thomas. I was just wondering if it were possible or if it would work if I wanted to create a page(actually a post) on one page where I could allow comments? I’d like to add a discussion page and that seems like the easiest way, but I didn’t kow what would happen if you created posts and if I could just create a link for them and treat it like a blog within a cms. Yes, I am a newby. Thanks for your help and otherwise I have enjoyed using your theme, it was perfect for our application I think.

  146. Deborah Schultz says:

    I am stuck. My images are not showing up even though I changed them in the page. I put a logo up and all that is showing is the name that I typed in alt. I am using a cpanel to upload my pics. Is this a good thing to do? They are listed in the directory where the other images are, but they aren’t showing up.
    Thanks,
    This is the best and most helpful site that I have been to when attempting to use wordpress as a CMS.

  147. JC says:

    This template is just great. Simple to use, effective, good looking. I will use it for my main website. Thanks!

  148. JC says:

    Thomas, a simple question: Is it possible to change the color of the surrounding area (left and right)? How can I do that? Thanks!

  149. JC says:

    Thomas, I already figure out how to change the color…

    ====
    body { text-align:center;
    background: #(color);
    }
    ====

    Now I would like to know how to have the Submit Comment form… I know this should be a very basic question, I’m just starting with WP. Thanks!

  150. JC says:

    Hey, this is easy and fun. Solved the comments issue as follows:

    1) Added in page.php the entry indicated as /*new*/:

    <?php edit_post_link(’Edit this entry.’, ”, ”); ?>

    It worked, but when comments where not allowed, I had an message saying: “Comments are closed”. To solve this…

    2) Modify the style.css to read:

    .nocomments {text-align: center; margin: 0; padding: 0;
    display:none; /* new */}

    And the message is gone.

    Cool! Continue playing around…

    Congrats! This template is superb.

  151. Federico says:

    Hello Thomas, hope you read this.. I’ve tried and tried to solve a
    little problem but just can’t. Your theme is great but I need some
    extra help: the border around the widget section in the sidebar seems
    to ignore jpgs and images.

    any advice? I think it’s around the widgetbox definition in
    style.css, but i’m a real newbie.. hope you can help.

    Thanks so much,

    Federico.

  152. Federico says:

    Hey Thomas! got it, it was the “float” definition on the img definition in style.css… at least changing this worked. if you have more advice on it, well appreciated!

    thanks for the cool theme this was just what i was looking for!

    fm.

  153. Neil says:

    It’s been a while since Thomas has been here (like, months!)

    In the meantime, I’m desperately trying to figure out how to “center” and “right” images. The explanations here and elsewhere are just miles over my head.

    Will Somebody PLEASE “dumb it down” and just tell me the exact steps to make an image “center” or “right”

    If this template has any major failing, it’s the lack of info on images. May I suggest that in the next release - cover it! The world does not live on “left” alone!

  154. Carrie says:

    I love your layout there is just one more thing that is driving me nuts! On your lay out it’s all on one page I do no have to scroll over, but on my page I have to scroll over, how to I make it so there is no scrolling involved?

  155. Lv4tech says:

    Hey man just wanted to say 10x for the theme… I used it to build the site in the description. I will probably extend modify it, hope this doesn’t interfere with copyright gpl or any of that stuff :D

  156. admin says:

    Lv4tech - I love what you have done with the theme. Unless one looks at the code, it’s not recognizable as the Jelly theme. And that’s the way it should be.

  157. Kristin says:

    Thomas,

    I love this template! It is very easy to use! I do have a problem that I hope you can help with though. I’m trying to create a menu bar that does not include the blog link on it. However, I’m leaving the blog info in the side bar as a news section that I can post occasional relevant content in. Since I uploaded Wordpress directly to the root, I think I can get around the fact that the blog comes up as the home page by redirecting to the about page. Here’s the catch. . .(I’m not sure if this is a Wordpress 2.7 issue or a personal problem) but my titles are not working and I’m also having a hard time linking them to the tabs on the menu bar. Instead of my title showing up as http://northtexasurologist.com/about, it is showing up as http://northtexasurologist.com/?page_id=4/. This is not going to work for SEO. Do you have any idea as to whether this is a 2.7 problem or something I screwed up when I was editing your template?

    Thanks, in advance, or your help! Again, this template is great. I plan on using it as a foundation for most of my sites!

    Kristin

  158. Kristin says:

    Thomas,

    Please disregard my previous message. I was able to correct my problems easily through Wordpress Admin.

    Sorry to bug you. :)

    Thanks,

  159. Dana says:

    Hi, this looks like a great template (clean and simple) and a wonderful, helpful website (a real labor of love).

    Thank you for all your hard work, and for sharing what you have learned to help make the process easier for others.

    My question is, will this template work with more recent versions of Wordpress. The current version that can be auto-installed at my host is 2.7. I still have access to manually install 2.6.2.

    Again, thank you! I look forward to your response.

  160. JC says:

    I noticed a little problem, that should be considered:

    As this template uses XHTML 1.0, you need to be more rigorous in the syntax.

    In order to pass the W3C validation, be sure to NOT use ‘—>’ to end the comments. If you do that, it will complaint. Be sure to add a blank or any other letter, like in the example:

    Of course this is very bad, too:

    This will not create any problem for the browsers, but will create problems to the crawlers. This may make your page not to be indexed or some links not followed.

    Thomas, maybe you want to fix the minor syntax issues in the template. Most of them related to comments, some others to the order of tags use. Use the validator http://validator.w3.org/ to verify.

  161. JC says:

    Oops, the example comments I included in my previous post were removed.

    Just be sure to end any comment with:

    ‘[blank]–>’ good
    ‘[letter]–>’ good

    And not with
    ‘—>’ bad

    Never use three ‘-’ to end a comment, DTD XHTML 1.0 does not accept it.

  162. N1XY says:

    Hey,

    Brilliant skin, I was able to work it into my forum design really well (pwnsome.com/forums). Lucky that your navbar was so similar to the one my forums use.

    Thanks a million,

  163. JC says:

    Thomas,
    I have a little problem I cannot solve:

    Is it possible to customize graphic alignment in the widget text box in the side bar?

    I added a graphic ad thru a text widget and it’s shown there but aligned to the left. How can I handle it?

    Thanks
    Juan Carlos

  164. JC says:

    Ok, I find it how.
    Added the following css:

    img.nofloat {float: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px} /* new */

    Also this css that I use for in-line images:
    /* Begin Images */
    p img {
    padding: 0;
    max-width: 100%;
    }

    /* Using ‘class=”alignright”‘ on an image will (who would’ve thought?!) align the image to the right. And using ‘class=”centered’, will of course center the image. This is much better than using align=”center”, being much more futureproof (and valid) */

    img.centered {
    display: block;
    margin-left: auto;
    margin-right: auto;
    }

    img.alignright {
    padding: 4px;
    margin: 0 0 2px 7px;
    display: inline;
    }

    img.alignleft {
    padding: 4px;
    margin: 0 7px 2px 0;
    display: inline;
    }

    .alignright {
    float: right;
    }

    .alignleft {
    float: left;
    }
    /* End Images */

    And finally used the following code:

    And now the graphic in the sidebar is within the textbox, and the image centered.

    Cool! Hope this help someone…

  165. JC says:

    Oops - The code was not shown. Here it is:

    Added an extra space to the img so it can be shown.

  166. JC says:

    It didn’t work. Here’s the code:

    (left bracket)img class=”centered nofloat” src=”…

  167. admin says:

    Sorry guys, lately I have not been very good at responding to questions… Good to see though that usually shortly after a question is posted I get a message saying that the problem has been resolved. Magic.

    I have been busy playing around with Google App Engine. It offers a few advantages over hosting on a LAMP stack and as part of my learning experience I ported the jelly template to App Engine. It does not offer the same range of functions or the convenience of an admin console, but if you just want to build a simple site with static content you might want to consider it. I found it a very rewarding experience.

    If you want to see what I came up with, check out Drikatruu Omega3 and let me know here what you think.

    Have fun, Thomas.
